Scott Joplin

Known as the "King of Ragtime," this son of a former slave was born circa 1867 in Texas and may have had access to a piano in the white-owned house in which his mother worked. He's best known for "The Maple Leaf Rag" and "The Entertainer," later used in the movie "The Sting." No copies of his first opera have been found, but his "Treemonisha" opera was successfully staged in the 1970s. He died in 1917 in New York and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1976 for his contributions to American music.
